Moving Tips From Dev International, Agra

A practical guide from the people who pack and move homes every week: what to do, when to do it and how to save money.

Quick answer: Start preparing six to eight weeks before your move, sort and reduce your belongings, book a survey early, keep documents and valuables with you, label cartons by room, and plan your first day in the new home before moving day.

Your Eight-Week Moving Checklist

Eight to six weeks before

  • Decide your moving date and give notice to your landlord if you rent.
  • Book a survey with two or three movers and compare written estimates, not phone quotes.
  • Start sorting: keep, sell, donate or discard.
  • If children are changing schools, arrange transfer certificates and admission.

Five to four weeks before

  • Confirm your mover and date in writing.
  • Inform your employer if relocation expenses are reimbursed and ask what bills they need.
  • Start packing rarely used items if you are packing some things yourself.
  • Check society rules at both homes for moving hours, lift booking and deposits.

Three to two weeks before

  • Update your address with the bank, insurance, gas agency, Aadhaar-linked services and online shopping accounts.
  • Arrange disconnection and reconnection of internet, electricity and DTH.
  • Use up frozen food and pantry stock.
  • Service your car if it is being transported.

The last week

  • Pack a bag of essentials for each family member for three days.
  • Keep documents, jewellery, cash and medicines in a separate bag that travels with you.
  • Defrost and dry the refrigerator a day before.
  • Take photos of the back of your TV and electronics before disconnecting them.

Packing Advice From Our Crew

Heavy items go in small cartons and light items in large ones, so every carton can be lifted safely. Fill empty space with paper or clothes so nothing rattles. Tape the bottom of every carton twice. Label two sides with the room and a short list of contents. Pack plates on their edges, not flat. Keep screws and small parts in labelled bags taped to the furniture they belong to. And leave fragile items, electronics and heavy furniture to professionals if you can.

How to Save Money on Your Move

  • Move less: Old furniture and appliances can cost more to move than to replace.
  • Pick the right date: Mid-month weekdays are usually cheaper and easier to book than month-end weekends.
  • Share the truck: For small intercity loads, a shared truck costs much less than a dedicated one.
  • Pack simple items yourself: Clothes, books and linen are easy to pack and reduce labour charges.
  • Get a proper survey: Accurate estimates avoid expensive surprises on the day.

Moving With Children

Children cope better when they are involved. Let them pack a box of their favourite things and decorate it. Talk about the new home and the new school positively. On moving day, keep a bag with snacks, a charger and a toy or book. At the new home, set up their bed first so the first night feels familiar.

Moving With Pets

Pets feel stress when furniture disappears. Keep their food, bowls, bedding and a favourite toy with you, not in the truck. On packing and loading days, keep them in a quiet room with the door closed or with a friend. For long journeys, carry water and plan regular breaks, and check any rules for pets at your new society.

Moving Elderly Parents

Keep medicines, prescriptions and medical reports in a separate bag. Arrange a comfortable seat for the journey and plan rest stops. Ask the crew to assemble and make their bed first at the new home, and place frequently used items within easy reach.

Your First Day in the New Home

Check cartons against the packing list as they come in. Unpack the kitchen basics, bathroom essentials and bedding first. Test the water supply, electricity and gas. Meet your neighbours and the society office, and note emergency numbers. Leave the rest of the unpacking for the following days, one room at a time.

Choosing a Mover

Ask for a physical office address, a written estimate, clear terms for damage and delays, and a named supervisor. Be wary of very low phone quotes that change later. If you would like Dev International to plan your move, call +91 8650688588 or read about our home shifting service.

Settling Into Your New Home

The first week after a move sets the tone for life in a new place. These steps help you settle faster.

First week

Update your address with the bank, gas agency, mobile provider and employer. Register with the local society office if you are in an apartment. Find the nearest hospital, pharmacy, grocery store and school.

Within a month

Change the address on your Aadhaar, driving licence and vehicle registration if you have moved to another state. Keep the moving receipts and packing list until you are sure everything has been checked.

Moving During Summer and Monsoon

Agra's summers are very hot and the monsoon brings heavy showers, and both affect moving day. In summer, start early in the morning so that loading is finished before the hottest hours, keep drinking water ready for the family and crew, and protect electronics and candles from direct sun. Wax, medicines and some cosmetics should travel with you rather than in a closed truck.

During the monsoon, ask your mover to cover furniture with stretch film and plastic sheet, keep cartons off wet floors, and have someone hold an umbrella or tarpaulin over the truck door during loading. Wooden furniture needs extra wrapping on long routes because humidity inside a closed truck can cause swelling. Plan a buffer day in case heavy rain delays loading.

Winter is the most comfortable season for moving in north India, which is why weekends from October to March book up quickly. If you can move on a weekday, you will often find better availability.

Shifting Into an Apartment Society

Apartment moves need a little extra planning because of shared spaces and society rules. Before moving day, ask the society office about permitted shifting hours, lift booking, any refundable deposit and whether a no-objection letter is needed. Inform the security guards about the truck's arrival time and the name of the supervisor.

Protect lift walls and corridors with padding or sheets if the society requires it, and keep the corridor clear for other residents. Check the size of the lift and doors against your largest furniture; some sofas and beds may need to be dismantled or carried by the stairs. Our supervisor checks these details during the survey so there are no surprises on the day.

At the new society, collect the access card and parking sticker early, register for maintenance services, and introduce yourself to neighbours. Small steps like these make settling into a new community much easier.

Finally, remember that a move is a big change, and it is normal to feel tired or stressed during it. Make lists, ask for help from family and friends, and do not try to do everything on the last day. Starting early, keeping essentials close and choosing a reliable mover are the three steps that make the biggest difference. With good planning, most customers tell us that their moving day turned out far easier than they expected, and that settling into the new home was the exciting part.

Happy moving from all of us at Dev International Packers and Movers, Agra.
